MY BOOKS

My first books were a series of Physical Science textbooks designed to be used with my class when I was a middle school science teacher. They were a success at the time selling over 2000 copies of the three volumes (combined). When I retired from teaching and began instructing the class on beginning fly fishing, I was disappointing with the options available for a book that could be used with my class. I wrote Introduction to Fly fishing - From Confused Beginner to Competent Angler. This was meant to be the last word in books about beginning fly fishing and was done very professionally with a lot of others involved. The result was a long book with great color photos which covered a lot of material. It turned out to be a good book but expensive due to printing costs, although the e-book version is more affordable.

For a new fly anglers the best thing to do is find a mentor or take a class. The books are the second best option. YouTube is always an option but the information is both good and bad.

The goal of this book is to help a new fly angler select equipment tailored to them, and teach some of the fly fishing basics. This book is written for the absolute beginning fly angler. It was written as a textbook for the fly fishing classes I teach Hopefully everyone will find something of value among these pages. Topics covered include rod selection, knots, casting, basic fly selection, aquatic insects, how to read the water, trout fishing tactics, euro-nymphing and how to catch your first fish on a fly. Are you the kind of person who only fishes a few times per year, or is this going to be your next hobby, and you plan on doing it a lot? Depending on what you want to do, the cost can be low or quite high. Hopefully this book will help you fit the equipment to your personal needs. Where does a beginner stop being a beginner? Is it after one lesson, one trip, or one season? When the learning ends, if it ever ends, is that when a beginner is no longer a beginner? Maybe a little bit more about insects, fly selection or fishing techniques such as a detailed explanation on Euro-nymphing are required. Maybe there are some new things in this book for an experienced angler after all. This book is meant to bring a total beginner to a solid average fly angler. But wait, where does a solid average angler stop being average …….?  So this book is written for the total beginner who knows nothing about fly fishing, but includes enough information, that by the end of the book, they will not be a beginner anymore, but an competent angler. But wait, where does a competent angler stop being a competent angler? Maybe it is when a person sees a beautiful scenic photograph and can only imagine what fly to use for the river in the background. Perhaps it is time for all of us to go on a journey to the dark side of fishing.

A black and white low cost version is available also.

This is a very condensed version of my book Introduction to Fly Fishing - From Confused Beginner to Competent Angler. This version includes select chapters about selecting and identifying tools and equipment, fly rod types, tying common knots, setting up a rod, basic fly selection, and how to fish the different types of flies. It is printed in black and white to save cost. This version does not include the chapters covering casting, insect stages, aquatic food, fly fishing techniques, seasonal fly patterns, reading water, and euro-nymphing. This book is a basic manual for an introduction to fly fishing class for the total and absolute beginner.

This book is designed for a person who knows absolutely nothing about fly fishing and the equipment involved or as a supplement for an introduction to fly fishing class.

Fly fishing from competent angler to the dark side.

This book includes every trick I know to catch a lot of trout. It includes a 2 year journal of fishing the Yellow Breeches Creek.
